March 14, 2024. The LIFE Landfill Biofuel project, financed by the European Commission with more than 4.5 million euros, has marked a milestone in the use of waste for the production of renewable energy and its use in mobility.
The objective of LIFE Landfill Biofuel, which began in 2019 and will end this year, is to demonstrate the viability of the implementation of new profitable methodologies for the exploitation of waste that allow improving production and recovering landfill biogas. Additionally, the project focuses on the application of advanced technologies for the processing of this biogas, in order to produce high-quality biomethane, suitable for use as fuel in vehicles.
The initiative has launched an innovative demonstration plant on a pre-industrial scale, located in the “La Ecocentral Granada” urban solid waste treatment plant, which has achieved a production of 220 m3/h of high-quality biomethane. This renewable gas has been used to move a light vehicle and a heavy vehicle, which have traveled more than 71,200 km with 20,600 kg of biomethane, avoiding the emission of more than 54,300 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere by using biomethane instead of diesel.
Another significant milestone of the LIFE Landfill Biofuel project is that it has established a business model replicable in other waste treatment plants, thus promoting the valorization of biogas and the commercialization of the biomethane produced, and helping to promote the development of the sector in Spain and in other countries in Europe.
It is also worth highlighting the notable social impact that the project has had, evidenced by the growing public interest and environmental awareness for an energy transition with clean and renewable technologies. After a survey carried out among citizens at the national level, practically 97% of those surveyed positively valued the impact of the project to reduce polluting emissions and energy dependence.
