February 16, 2025. The alliance between Gás Verde, considered the largest producer of biomethane in Latin America, and Scania promises to increase the use of renewable fuel in the Brazilian transport sector. The companies designed an offer in which the transporter receives a package with vehicles, management and maintenance services and a guarantee of supply.
To start the business, Gás Verde hired 100 Scania GH 460 6×2 natural gas trucks with after-sales services included to sublease to customers. The first 40 units will be delivered in February.
The biomethane producer is also responsible for supplying the fuel to the transport operator’s home and to points located on the main logistics routes in the Southeast.
“The idea began to mature when we decided to transport our biomethane using a gas-powered truck, which makes perfect sense,” says Marcel Jorand, CEO of Gás Verde. “Biomethane is proving to be the best solution to decarbonize companies and fleets, in addition to facilitating the reduction of CO2 in scope 3, that is, from outside the company, in the value chain.”
To guarantee supply to the transporter, Gás Verde has the capacity to produce 160 thousand cubic meters of biomethane/day in two plants located in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. But production will reach 650,000 cubic meters/day in 2028, when ten more plants will be in operation in six states,” says Jorand.
For Scania, this partnership represents another step on the path to its goal of consolidating sustainable transport. “With five years of experience with natural gas trucks, we contribute to the Blue Corridors projects for greater supply coverage in the country and we become a global center for the production and supply of gas engines,” highlights Alex Nucci, Director of Sales and Solutions for Scania Commercial Operations Brazil.
