Madrid City Council sends 40 CNG buses to Burgos after fire destroys half of its fleet

The fleet consists of 12-meter municipal CNG buses, equipped for urban transport.

April 29, 2026. The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has announced the immediate and temporary transfer of 40 buses from the Municipal Transport Company (EMT Madrid) to the city of Burgos, following the fire that destroyed its workshops and depots and jeopardized the city’s transport system.

The entire fleet that EMT Madrid will transfer to Burgos is powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and consists of standard 12-meter buses equipped for urban service. The fleet will be transported from Madrid by drivers from the city of Burgos.

The Mayor emphasized the City Council’s immediate response to the emergency, highlighting that “Madrid is there when you need it” and that it is “a city of solidarity,” where “what happens anywhere else in Spain also happens to us.” In this regard, he appealed to the “duty of solidarity and gratitude,” recalling that “we were the first to receive help when we were going through the worst of it.”

He also praised the role of public transport as “the backbone of mobility in a city” and the “professionalism, dedication, and commitment” of the EMT Madrid workers, a service that in 2025 surpassed “the 500 million user mark.” In this context, he explained that the donated buses “are yours, they belong to the city of Burgos, they belong to the people of Burgos,” with the goal of “ensuring mobility returns to normal as soon as possible.”

In addition to the buses, and to help expedite the resumption of operations, EMT Madrid has deployed two mobile workshop vans, an intervention vehicle, and an escort tow truck. The municipal company will also send a six-person technical team and has arranged for the dispatch of spare parts for the fleet.
