May 5, 2026. The Agency for Safety, Energy and the Environment (ASEA) of the Mexican government published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the Mexican Official Standard NOM-022-ASEA-2026, Natural Gas Compression Facilities for Filling Transportable Storage Modules and Service Stations Specifically for the Public Sale of Compressed Natural Gas for Motor Vehicles.
The standard aims to establish the technical specifications and requirements for Industrial Safety, Operational Safety, and environmental protection that must be met by regulated entities that operate Natural Gas Compression Facilities for filling Transportable Storage Modules and Service Stations specifically for the Public Sale of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for motor vehicles.
With the publication of NOM-022-ASEA-2026, a regulatory framework is established that strengthens operational, industrial, and environmental safety in the development of natural gas compression and CNG dispensing activities.
This strengthens the natural gas market as a fuel for motor vehicles, under a clear and secure regulatory framework, which is aligned with Objective 2 of the 2025-2030 Energy Sector Program: “To promote strategic renewable energy projects, energy efficiency, and technological innovation to mitigate environmental impact and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, prioritizing historically marginalized regions and sectors.”
