July 22, 2026. The Organization of European Road Transport (OTRE) published its position paper in favor of a realistic energy transition, based on the complementarity of solutions rather than their opposition. While electricity is destined to become the main energy source for road transport in the future, we are still at the beginning of this transformation. Economic, technological, and operational constraints require maintaining a diversified energy mix throughout the transition period.
At a time when the SNBC3 (National Low Carbon Strategy 3) prioritizes a trajectory strongly oriented towards electrification, OTRE reiterates that renewable fuels and biogas already allow for emissions reductions in the sector and are readily available solutions for multiple uses. Pitting them against electricity would be a mistake; these energy sources are complementary and contribute to the same decarbonization goal.
With the upcoming budget bill approaching, OTRE also expresses its concern about the risks of penalizing alternative energy sources, in which many transport companies have already invested, through taxes or regulations. Undermining these solutions would not automatically lead to a transition to electric vehicles, but could instead encourage a return to diesel, contrary to the intended objectives.
Companies need transparency, stability, and technological neutrality to continue investing in decarbonization.
