March 6, 2026. Europe must decisively accelerate the development of biomethane to advance decarbonization and strengthen its industrial competitiveness, energy security, and territorial cohesion. This was one of the main conclusions of Biomethane Connect Europe 2026, the leading European forum dedicated to renewable gases, organized in Madrid by the European gas distributors’ association, Gas Distributors for Sustainability (GD4S), with the support of Nedgia, the gas distributor in Spain belonging to the Naturgy group.
Throughout the congress, it was highlighted that biomethane is consolidating itself as a readily available, manageable, and locally produced renewable energy solution, playing a crucial role in strengthening the resilience of the European energy system and establishing itself as another alternative to drive decarbonization.
The participants—including prominent European representatives from the political, regulatory, and business sectors—agreed that the main challenge in the development of biomethane no longer lies in the ambition of the targets to be achieved, but rather in their effective implementation. This requires stable regulatory frameworks, clear demand signals, and greater administrative agility to accelerate investments and projects on the ground.
In this context, the strategic role of gas networks as enabling infrastructure was also emphasized. These networks are essential for integrating renewable gases, providing flexibility to the energy system, and advancing toward a transition that is simultaneously competitive, efficient, and inclusive.
