New working group to facilitate the use of biomethane in Germany

Biomethane will be a key component for the climate-neutral operation of vehicles, industrial plants, and heat generators.

March 8, 2026. Biomethane will be a key component for the climate-neutral operation of vehicles, industrial plants, and heat generators. As a renewable, storable, and flexibly deployable molecule, it can decarbonize existing infrastructure while simultaneously contributing to security of supply. To accelerate the development of this potential, the German Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association (Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft) is launching the Working Group on Biomethane.

The initiative aims to accelerate the widespread adoption of biomethane and promote policy frameworks that will make investments in production, infrastructure, and utilization predictable once again. While the European Commission has set an ambitious target of 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane by 2030 with RePowerEU, Germany risks falling behind in developing the necessary capacity. Countries like France and Italy have long been creating solid investment conditions and are steadily driving expansion.

The current market situation is characterized by the tension between climate protection goals and constraints. Timm Kehler, Managing Director of the German Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association, explains: “Biomethane can become a key pillar of climate-neutral gas supply. However, the necessary guidelines are currently lacking. The expiration of the Gas Grid Access Regulation and EEG subsidies, as well as the unclear implementation of the EU Gas Internal Market Package, are creating uncertainty among consumers and slowing investment in new production capacity.”
