June 23, 2023. Quavii, a subsidiary of Promigás that leads the distribution and commercialization of natural gas in northern Peru, put into operation a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) station located in Alto Moche in Trujillo.
The facility is intended to service heavy-duty vehicles and will contribute to the energy transition of the transport sector in Peru.
This is the first LNG station in the north of the country and will be complemented by the one that was also installed in the city of Chiclayo. Both infrastructures are located at strategic points on the North Pan-American Highway and required an investment of 3.5 million dollars.
“With the LNG filling stations we seek to expand the scope of the use of natural gas in the north of the country, to transfer the benefits of an economic and abundant resource to more and more Peruvians, in order to improve their quality of life, generate savings and contribute to caring for the environment,” said Juan Manuel Rojas, President of Promigás.
The use of LNG can generate savings of up to 40% compared to diesel. That is, in the case of a unit that travels 10,000 kilometers per month, the savings can reach up to $30,000.
“LNG is the ally of sustainable heavy cargo transportation because it generates zero emissions of particulate matter, 30% less CO2 emissions, and has autonomy of up to 1,600 kilometers,” said Rojas.
As reported by the company, the Trujillo and Chiclayo facilities will be integrated into the Green Corridor, along with the one installed by Cálidda in Lima, to ensure LNG coverage on the coast in the transportation sector.
“Starting in 2024, our entire fleet of trucks, which carry out virtual transportation to our coverage areas, will operate 100% on natural gas (compressed and liquefied). The goal for 2040 includes 30 stations and 60,000 vehicles, between light and heavy, that will use natural gas in the north,” said Miguel Maal, General Manager of Promigás Peru.
