October 17, 2026. The Sasieta Commonwealth—a supra-municipal local entity in Gipuzkoa, Spain—has unveiled a new compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station. The facility is designed to supply the Commonwealth’s fleet of waste collection trucks, which have transitioned to this technology as an alternative to diesel over the past few months.
The shift to CNG reflects the Commonwealth’s commitment to sustainability and improving air quality in the Goierri region. Data collected between August 2025 and August 2026 confirm the positive environmental impact of this transition: the CNG-powered trucks have prevented the emission of 120.4 tons of CO2 compared to what they would have emitted running on diesel—a 22.8% reduction in emissions from these vehicles.
In addition to lowering CO2 levels, the CNG trucks contribute to better local air quality; compared to diesel, this fuel reduces particulate matter (PM) emissions by 95% and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 85%—pollutants that directly affect human health. Furthermore, engine noise is reduced by 50% compared to conventional diesel trucks, which improves working conditions for collection staff and lessens the noise impact in the urban areas where these vehicles operate.
