March 29, 2024. Driven by demand from transporters and the growing desire of operators to move towards green, biomethane continues to grow in France. According to the first data from the Open Data Réseaux Energies (ODRE) platform and published by France Mobilité Biogaz on Linkedin, a new record was established during the year 2023.
With 3.45 TWh sold in 2023, total consumption of compressed natural gas (CNG) increased by 16% compared to 2022. On the Bio-CNG side, it reached 1.35 TWh in 2023, or 39.2% of the total CNG used during the period. It is also 26% better than in 2022.
In terms of regional consumption, Ile-de-France remains in first position. With 1.2 TWh of CNG, or 18% more than in 2022, it alone represents 35% of all compressed natural gas sold in France last year.
With stable use, the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region occupies second position with 0.378 TWh consumed, while Upper France is in third position with 0.328 TWh, 9% better than in 2022.
As for the other regions, good progress is observed in the Southern Region (+51%), Normandy (+50%) and Occitania (+30%). The Val de Loire Center recorded the largest increase (+99%), but remains last in terms of volumes sold (0.043 TWh in 2023).
Finally, regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG), open data indicates consumption equivalent to 2022, or 1,150 TWh used.
Cumulatively, the total consumption of natural gas for vehicles (CNG+LNG) for 2023 is thus established at 4.6 TWh, of which almost a third is organic.
