April 9, 2023. Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) is participating in a circular economy project that will allow it to put into circulation a bus powered by biomethane, a fuel obtained from treated sludge and wastewater. The biomethane used will come from the production plant inaugurated at the Baix Llobregat Ecofactory, under the supervision of the European LIFE NIMBUS project. It is expected that this fuel will reduce the carbon footprint by more than 85% thanks to its high quality and renewable, emission-neutral nature.
The European LIFE NIMBUS project is a research initiative co-financed by the EC and framed within the LIFE program, which aims to promote more sustainable transport through the circular economy. This measure is aligned with the biogas roadmap, which was approved in Spain in 2022, and which identifies the challenges and opportunities for the development of this gas of renewable origin and proposes quadrupling its national production by 2030. In this collaborative project led by the Water Technology Center (Cetaqua) participates TMB, Aguas de Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
During the inauguration ceremony of the new production plant, the importance of research and collaboration between different entities to provide solutions that make it possible to decarbonize transport has been highlighted. The CEO of TMB, Gerardo Lertxundi, has recognized the entire company team that made this initiative a reality, stressing that “it is a sustainable circular economy project and to which we at TMB are totally committed” and has indicated that “it is a strategic policy for TMB and we hope it will continue to be able to use biomethane on a massive scale”.
