Analysis of NGV use in freight transport in Latin America

CAF and the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization will host a session dedicated to analyzing the potential of Natural Gas for Vehicles.

October 20, 2026. CAF—the development bank for Latin America and the Caribbean—and the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLACDE) will host a session dedicated to analyzing the potential of Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) as an alternative to imported diesel in freight transport, as well as the opportunities for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a vector for regional trade.

During the event, which will take place on October 28, the results of studies conducted under the MERCOSUR + Chile Regional Gas Integration Project will be presented. These studies analyze the competitiveness of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) compared to diesel, identify corridors with potential for gas adoption, and examine the outlook for LPG production, export, and regional supply.

The session will begin with opening remarks from Guido Maiulini, Head of Strategic Advisory at OLACDE, alongside representatives from CAF and energy sector authorities from Argentina.

Following this, OLACDE will present the key findings of the studies, which will lead into two discussion forums:

  • Challenges for Gas Adoption: Vehicle manufacturers, transport operators, specialists from Argentina’s National Gas and Electricity Regulatory Body (ENReGE), and representatives from YPF will analyze the availability of technologies, the necessary infrastructure, and financing conditions required to promote the use of natural gas in freight transport.
  • LPG: Representatives from YPF Gas and the participating countries will address logistical challenges, supply opportunities, and the commercial conditions necessary to expand regional trade.

The meeting will help identify opportunities to strengthen regional energy integration, diversify supply alternatives, and promote greater utilization of natural gas and LPG across the participating countries.
