June 8, 2020. Barcelona will be one of the first cities in Europe to have hybrid articulated buses of compressed natural gas (CNG), a technology that reduces emissions, as reported by Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) in Spain.
This public company has opened the bidding process to acquire 46 hybrid CNG buses, 30 standard-size units of 12 meters long, and 16 articulated of 18 meters.
It is the first time that TMB has launched a specific tender to incorporate new buses that combine electric and CNG thrusters.
The 13 of this technology that are currently part of the TMB fleet were built from conventional compressed natural gas vehicles, to which two electric motors, a generator and other components were added, in an innovative project developed by TMB and Gas Natural Fenosa for the years 2012-2013.
The order is completed with the offer to supply six diesel minibuses with a Euro 6 environmental category to replace the oldest vehicles in the Bus del Barri service.
The acquisition of these 52 new buses has a base budget of 21.3 million euros.
