October 21, 2021. The Government of the State of Nuevo León, Mexico, announced the acquisition of 510 new units for public passenger transport, of which 400 will have a natural gas system and will be used for urban routes, and 110 will be completely electric and will be used for feeder routes of Line 3 of the metro.
At a press conference, the Secretary of Mobility Hernán Villarreal, reported that the first 100 buses, powered by natural gas, will be arriving in the first 100 days, that is, in the first three months of the administration.
At the same time, the agency will be starting the tests for the acquisition of the first 100 electric vehicles that will supply the 3 feeder routes of Metro Line 3: Diego Díaz de Berlanga, Rómulo Garza and López Mateos.
“There are more than 1,000 units with more than 10 years old and they are all out of the norm. We are going to start by renovating units, because that is urgent, and in the first instance we will introduce 400 natural gas buses,” Villarreal explained.
The aim is for the entity to have the largest natural gas and electric public transport fleet in the country, and thereby begin to combat the pollution problems of Nuevo León. As explained, the nearly 6,000 vehicles that are currently circulating, and have a diesel engine, produce about 165,000 tons of CO2 per year.
