Shell unveils first LNG filling station in Slovakia

Shell Slovakia has unveiled its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling station in Slovakia.

November 12, 2024. Shell Slovakia has unveiled its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling station in Slovakia. The Lozorno facility is located in the P3 Bratislava D2 logistics zone, which can be accessed from both sides of the D2 motorway, which is part of the transport corridor connecting Prague, Bratislava and Budapest. Shell will soon open another LNG filling station in Senec, in the Scania logistics area, at kilometre 27 of the D1 motorway. Jana Voštinárová, Director of Corporate Communications at Shell Slovakia, said that this opens up access for transporters to the oil company’s extensive network of LNG filling stations across Europe.

Both stations are technologically prepared for LNG refueling and also for a possible alternative: Bio-LNG. Investments in LNG infrastructure are part of Shell’s commitment to developing solutions to reduce emissions in transport, Voštinárová said.

According to Shell, LNG represents one of the most effective solutions for decarbonizing freight transport in Europe. Compared to D7 diesel, it offers an 18% reduction in CO2 emissions over the entire fuel life cycle, depending on the engine type. In addition, LNG-powered vehicles can also fully use Bio-LNG, if available.

“Shell’s ambition is to reduce emissions from petroleum products by 15-20% in 2030 compared to 2021. LNG and Bio-LNG are an important part of this goal,” recalled Jarmila Gurská, CEO of Shell Slovakia, during the presentation of the Lozorno station.
