January 11, 2022. The transport companies that have made a more determined commitment to decarbonising the transport of people and goods cannot be the ones who pay the highest price of the energy crisis. That is why the Iberian Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (Gasnam) calls on the Spanish Government to give decisive support to pioneering companies in sustainable transport in the face of the general rise in natural gas prices.
According to the entity, since mid-2021 the country has witnessed an unprecedented increase in the cost of natural gas in international markets, with prices never seen before in the main energy indices.
Although forecasts indicate that this situation is temporary and will gradually ease in the coming months, it is currently having a direct impact on the competitiveness of transport companies that have opted for less polluting energy. These companies have been actively contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases for years and yet they are being unfairly penalized.
From Gasnam it is considered necessary that the different administrations get involved immediately and decisively in aid of the companies that are suffering the greatest damage derived from the drastic increase in prices. The sector recalls that the transition to non-polluting fuels must make a progressive decarbonisation process compatible with cost containment, with natural gas being the only mature solution that had made this possible at a significantly more competitive abatement cost than that of any other fuel.
In addition, the association understands that the lack of a decisive policy to promote renewable gas, as well as the absence of development of the adequate regulatory framework, means that in the face of a crisis such as the one currently experienced, Spain finds itself without an alternative.
