June 5, 2024. Published in the Official Gazette on May 25, the new Ecobonus 2024 allocates new resources to green the Italian vehicle fleet. Among the measures introduced is a bonus for the installation of a compressed natural gas (CNG) system for passenger cars.
With a budget of almost one billion euros, the Italian Ecobonus introduces several changes. Although the amount of the scrapping premium will now depend on the environmental class of the scrapped vehicle, specific aid is being incorporated for the installation of LPG or CNG systems.
In practice, only passenger cars (M1) that meet the Euro 4 standard or higher are eligible. The amount of aid allocated is €400 for an LPG kit and €800 for a CNG kit.
For the Italian authorities, the implementation of this new system should make it possible to compensate for the sharp drop in registrations of natural gas cars, caused by the significant reduction in supply in recent years.
During the first five months of 2024, only 1,136 CNG cars were registered in Italy. In 2021, almost 17,000 units had been registered in the same period.
